First footing

Something to warm your hearth, and food for your table.  Happy New Year!  Our typical New Years Eve involved watching the neighbours play street cricket until the light crept away and the mozzies started biting.  Then it was time to light the sparklers and dance around barefoot on the lawn drawing wishes for the New Year into the velvet sky with flaming sparks as the heat and humidity lingered into the night.  Finally breathing a sigh of relief as the southerly winds  blew away the worst of the heat and ushered in the fresh New Year.

Grandma always brings first footing gifts when she comes visiting in the New Year, a lump of coal or wood for the fire, and fresh fruits, nuts or shortbread.  I guess some old scottish traditions are hard to give up!   At least she did nae bring haggis!
