Advent – a hopeful start
November 30, 2008
Light the advent candle one, now the waiting has begun
Hope fill our hearts upon our way, time to think of Christmas day
Candle, candle burning bright, shining in the darkest night
Candle, candle burning bright, fill our hearts with Christmas light.
I read this beautiful advent poem, which continues over the four weeks of advent at Sarah’s blog last year. http://maymomvt.blogspot.com/2007/12/light-advent-candle-one.html I have changed it slightly to fit with what we are reflecting on in our advent (no winters here for a start!). Tonight we will light the first candle of our wreath, and say the first verse of the poem. Tomorrow we will start opening our advent calendar windows, unwrapping one piece each day from our nativity set set up on the nature table, and reading a story from “The Light in the Lantern” a lovely advent book of stories by Georg Dreissig (Wynstones press) of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem.
Blessings of Hope for the first Advent week

Actually, that is the lyrics of a song written in 1975 by Mary Lu Walker. There are a total of 5 different verses. This year our church is adding a verse each week as we light the next candle.
